Associate Professor Lionel Reyftmann is a Gynaecologist, Fertility Specialist and Laparoscopic Surgeon. He offers all types of infertility treatments including advanced hysteroscopic and laparoscopic procedures (endometriosis, fibroids, laparoscopic hysterectomies and tubal reconstruction).

Assoc. Prof. Reyftmann is a clinical academic at the University of Wollongong and at Wollongong Hospital, where he teaches obstetrics and gyneacology to the medical students.

He has pioneered in Australia a new minimally invasive surgical technique called the Fertiloscopy. This procedure helps to explore infertility and treat polycystic ovarian syndrome through the vagina, without any abdominal incision. 


 

After his initial training, Ass. Prof Reyftmann undertook further subspecialist training in reproductive medicine at the Montpellier University Hospital, France, where he held a staff specialist and senior lecturer position for seven years before moving to Australia.  He obtained the DESC - complementary diploma in specialized study - in reproductive medicine in 2007 (French CREI equiv.) Subspecialists are specialists, who have elected to undertake an additional two years of subspecialty study, in France, after completing general specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. They acquire advanced competencies and skills in the field of infertility, reproductive endocrinology and fertility surgery.

 

Assoc.Prof. Reyftmann is also an accredited specialist in Advanced Laparoscopy and Reproductive Surgery. He learned laparoscopy at the University Hospital Arnaud de Villeneuve in Montpellier, France and took some courses at the famous CICE, cradle of modern laparoscopy in Clermont-Ferrand.  Upon his arrival in Australia in 2010, Dr Reyftmann took a position at the prestigious Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre as a Research Fellow in advanced laparoscopic surgery with experts like Danny Chou, David Rosen and Greg Cario. SWEC is one of the most cutting edge laparoscopic unit of Australia where advanced operations are performed daily (total laparoscopic hysterectomies, tubal surgery, myomectomy, excision of endometriosis).

Assoc. Prof. Reyftmann spent 1 year out of clinical practice, in 2001, in a full time research post in a laboratory affiliated to the national Centre for scientific research (CNRS), French equivalent to the NHMRC.  He obtained a diploma of etudes approfondie DEA ( French equivalent to a master of applied science M App Sc) in cellular and molecular endocrinology from the university of Montpellier. Dr Reyftmann is a member of several scientific societies, and has widely presented at various society meetings.  He has authored or co-authored more than 30 international papers, encompassing such topics as natural IVF for poor responders, prenatal genetic diagnosis PGD, endometriosis, laparoscopy, and lifestyle factors related to infertility.  He is Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Wollongong, academic leader for Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was voted Clinician of the Year 2015 by the Wollongong University Medical Student Society.
