Dr Robert Salmon studied medicine at the University of New South Wales, graduating with honours in 1975. He worked and travelled in Australia and overseas before training as a specialist dermatologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. In 1983 Dr Salmon obtained his Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD) and the following year set up private and hospital practice in Wollongong. He established Illawarra Dermatology Associates in 1988, bringing visiting dermatologists to service the needs of the local community.
Dr Salmon also trained in Australia and the U.S. to become an accredited Mohs Surgeon and became a member of the American Dermatological Surgery Society. He served for several years as the Head of Surgery at the Skin and Cancer Foundation of Australia, Darlinghurst branch. He developed the first curriculum in Dermatological Surgery for the Australasian College of Dermatologists, serving three years on the College Council.
Dr Salmon is an accredited medical officer at Wollongong Day Surgery, where he performs skin cancer surgery. He has 25 years’ experience in office based procedural dermatology and has lectured both in Australia and overseas on various aspects of that subject.
Dr Salmon’s practice in Wollongong has continued to evolve and remains at the forefront of developments in dermatology. With the assistance of highly trained professional staff and the latest technological equipment, the practice is also expanding to cater to the cosmetic needs of patients. Having grown up on Coogee beach, Dr Salmon is well acquainted with the type of sun damage common to many Australians, and the best treatment options.
