Clinical Associate Professor Smita Agarwal is a comprehensive ophthalmologist. She is the Head of Ophthalmology Department at Shellharbour and Wollongong Public Hospitals in NSW. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong and lectures at the University of Sydney.

A/Prof Agarwal provides comprehensive ophthalmology services from her clinics in Wollongong, Nowra and Warilla. She also works at several public and private hospitals located at Shellharbour, Wollongong and Nowra. She specialises in cataract and refractive surgery and has interest in corneal cross-linking for progressive Keratoconus, Glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.

A/Prof Agarwal is actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical professionals and students. She teaches registrars and interns at public hospitals and regularly conducts continuing medical education seminars for doctors and Optometrists. She has taught eye surgery including cataract surgery to ophthalmology registrars at Westmead Eye Hospital and Monash Medical Centre, a 600+ bed teaching and research hospital in Melbourne.

Originally from India, A/Prof Agarwal completed her ophthalmology training at Monash Medical Centre gaining FRANZCO fellowship in 2006. Being passionate about cataract surgery, she went on to do an advanced fellowship for another year in Melbourne before moving back to Sydney. She has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Refractive Surgery from the University of Sydney.

She has recently set up a world class state-of-the-art facility for Refractive Corneal Surgery (SMILE, LASIK, PRK), a first for NSW South Coast.

A/Prof Agarwal is well respected in the field of ophthalmology. She has published several research papers in peer-reviewed journals and has presented lectures in Australia and at International ophthalmology meetings and conferences including:

A/Prof Agarwal has a strong interest in community regularly donates her time. She has provided free ophthalmology services in Fiji, India, Peru and Cambodia over the years. She went to Cambodia for the third time in late 2018.
