Dr Welan Dionela is an Australian-trained Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, and holds VMO position at Wollongong Hospital, and works alongside Dr Amit Kapur at Wollongong Day Surgery. Dr Dionela is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians
He received international scholarships and graduated from the University of Sydney Medical School in 2013. He completed his physician training at Wollongong Hospital. In 2021, he pursued Hepatology Fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia.
Dr Dionela holds a special interest in chronic liver disease including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, complications of cirrhosis, liver cancer and clinical trials.
Dr Dionela advocates for patient-centered specialist care. He is recognised by his colleagues and patients as passionate in his field. He was nominated as the local health district Medical Officer of the Year for 2 consecutive years. He is also a mentor to physician trainees and is involved in medical education at Wollongong Hospital. Dr Dionela was born in the Philippines and raised in Canada. He is fluent in Tagalog.
